Surprisingly, as a therapist, one of the most common questions I get asked is ‘Why Tulip’? When I first started my own therapy business, the name of my practice was definitely something I pondered on for a long time. Many other therapists named their practices after themselves, but using my name just didn’t fit - probably because it’s double-barrelled. Then I thought about the things I liked that I could name my business after. After a while, I came up with the idea of naming it after a flower. Flowers are pretty, they bring joy to many in the world, flowers show others that you care, and are even used to heal relationships and express sympathy. The flower idea felt like a good fit.
I knew I wanted the name to represent the work I do. Tulips are beautiful flowers, and a favourite of mine. I’m a spiritual person, so I wanted the name of my business to have meaning. I researched the spiritual meaning of a tulip flower, and I found out that tulips represent ‘rebirth, renewal, and hope’. I felt those words were very fitting for the work I do, as therapy offers people a sense of hope, a second chance, if you like. Digging deep within and learning about yourself, whether that be just to gain more understanding about who you are, work on becoming a better version of yourself, or overcome mental health difficulties, either way, the awareness gained in therapy creates the opportunity to bring a more conscious version of yourself into existence, which in essence is a sort of a rebirth. And that’s how my business name was born. The sound, the flow, the meaning and representation of Tulip aligned with me and my business.
Tulip Counselling & Psychotherapy is the name of my therapy practice in Headingley, and I’ve been located on North Lane since January 2025. Before moving there, I’ve been renting out rooms ad hoc in Headingley and working from home. I have a degree in counselling and psychotherapy, a postgraduate diploma in psychology, mental health and wellbeing, and I’m working towards my master's degree.
I have a range of counselling experience and years under my belt. I work mostly with adults; however, I’m also qualified to work with children and young people. I’ve worked in a school as a school counsellor and see some children/young people in my private practice. The therapy work I offer is tailored to each client that I work with, so my work is never the same. However, the most common reasons why people seek therapy with me are for self-esteem issues, confidence building, trauma, anxiety, grief, work-related stress/issues and low mood/depression. My experience as a grief and bereavement counsellor means I often get approached for grief work, and with me being based in Headingley, it means I have a wonderful opportunity to work with the student population, too. I offer my therapy services in person at my office, online and by telephone.
I genuinely love working in Headingley. It’s a nice place to walk to and easy to get to by bus. There’s a beautiful park I enjoy walking around in the warmer months, which is equally great for utilising skills such as mindfulness. There are lovely charity shops I’ve bought bits and bobs from, and even decorated my therapy room with, and I’m obsessed with coffee shops and cafes, which Headingley has plenty of! And they're in close proximity to one another, too, which is a bonus! So if you're a coffee shop lover like me and want to shake up your usual coffee routine, you don’t have to venture far to do so!
I think Headingley truly is a lovely, welcoming, diverse and inclusive area to be in. It’s very vibrant and lively. It’s also heart-warming to see a mix of all different ages coexisting together, which is especially evident when you visit some pubs.
Another thing I love about Headingley is that the community doesn’t just cater for the heavy student population, but there is something for all ages and walks of life. If you would like to find out more about my services, please visit my website www.tulipcounselling.co.uk
