Headingley Voices is very much a Headingley choir! We started out as a Lawnswood School project in 2009 and then renamed ourselves Headingley Voices in 2016 when we moved to our current home at Shire Oak Primary School in the centre of Headingley. Our choir director is local musician, Tricia Kyte.
Tricia is an experienced and inspiring leader who is committed to encouraging everyone to sing with confidence and enjoyment. This ethos is reflected in Tricia’s approach to rehearsals. She is always encouraging and enabling, instilling belief in our ability to sing together. And, above all, she makes rehearsals fun. Tricia has worked as an accompanying pianist and music teacher for the local Schools Music Service. She was introduced to choir leadership at a Sing for Pleasure (SfP) summer school and has since, participated in further SfP courses, as well as courses run by the Association of British Choral Directors and the Kodaly Academy. Tricia is also involved in other local choirs and plays accordion in ceilidh bands.
As a community choir we welcome everyone regardless of previous singing experience or ability to read music. We usually sing in four parts – soprano, alto, tenor and bass – providing opportunities for all female and male voices. We learn some songs by ear and, while we do use music scores for some songs, our choir director also teaches each part at our rehearsals. Our director also produces sound files for those who would like to practise at home.
Our choir repertoire includes many different kinds of music from a range of cultures and traditions. For example: songs from around the world; arrangements of modern and pop songs; traditional and folk music; and larger, classical choral works. Our choir director chooses music that is fun to sing and engaging to listen to but also challenges and stretches us musically.
Headingley Voices is an extremely friendly local choir. We rehearse every Thursday during school term time at Shire Oak Primary School. We welcome new members and would love to hear from anyone interested in joining us or finding out more. We do our best to be inclusive and to meet our members’ additional needs. Our rehearsal space is wheelchair accessible and there is an adjacent car park. No auditions are required and, if you are not sure if this is the choir for you, come along and try us out for a couple of weeks.
