Burley Bug Hotels

Cllrs Abdul Hannan & Jonathan Pryor reported on 20 April 2026, “Today we’ve installed four new bug hotels [that we commissioned & funded!] at Burley Park Station. Each is a mini model of a local landmark, The Hyde Park Picture House, the Cardigan Centre, the Bear Pit, and the Burley Park bandstand all made from recycled wood!

Hyde Park Bug House

Bug hotels provide a safe habitat for insects and small creatures to shelter, hibernate, and nest. The crevices for bugs to go in supports pollinators, encourages biodiversity, and hosts natural pest controllers like ladybirds, which help keep our green spaces and us healthy. These are now in place all around Burley Park railway station. Big thanks to all involved. We hope you love them!”

Col Powell, Community Hub Manager at TCV Hollybush in Kirkstall, said he hoped the models, made from recycled pallets, would invoke conversations about conservation. "Hopefully they are done in a memorable enough way that it sticks in people's heads and is more of an inspirational thing rather than browbeating people into feeling bad about not saving the planet."

The hotels were commissioned & funded by Cllrs Abdul Hannan & Jonathan Pryor, they were designed by the Cardigan Community Centre, and built by TCV Hollybush.

Sadly, following the local election on 7 May 2026, Jonathan is no longer a councillor.
