The Headingley Greengrocer

What do you want in a local green grocer? A great range of fresh high-quality fruit and vegetables, some of it very local, with the option of organic produce too, as well as plants and bulbs in season – and all served by friendly and knowledgeable staff under Kathy, its manager. That’s what The Headingley Greengrocer offers!

Throughout the pandemic it has expanded its reach and welcomes a huge range of customers, including those with limited budgets wanting just a few items at a time. It tries to offer just what its customers want, sourcing customers’ requests where it can, and avoiding plastic and packaging as much as possible. Business is thriving – and it’s hoped that those who discovered it during lockdown will continue to shop local.

It’s also a shop with a difference. It is owned by Headingley Development Trust (HDT), a community-based social enterprise, which bought the business in spring 2019 from its former owners, the Harris family who were retiring. In fact, there has been a greengrocer on this very site since 1918, so the business is built on very firm foundations. It also recognises its responsibility to the wider community, as a percentage of its profits each quarter go to support local food distribution charities.
