Back Garden Blooms

Seasonal, Local, Sustainable Cut Flowers
It all started back in 2015. After watching a Gardener’s World feature about Flowers from the Farm and the inspirational Jill who started this network of small flower growers. I went on a one day course, then decided to have a go myself.

As a life long gardener I love having a new growing challenge and the first one was to find somewhere to grow my flowers. However, after a few enquiries it turned out my lovely neighbour over the road was more than happy for me to take over the bottom half of his garden. I live in Headingley, in the ‘Cardigan Triangle’ residential area (near Headingley Stadium) so it was fantastic to find some room for growing the flowers.

I now grow flowers in a few different places, including my garden, our neighbour’s garden and also at our orchard field (5 miles north of Otley) that we purchased in 2018.

After learning a few floristry skills I started to sell at Headingley Farmer’s Market, and now supply flowers to The Headingley Green Grocer, and for private orders. All my flowers are seasonal, so I may not have much in the winter months, but I am starting to dry more flowers. I have also started drying petals for natural confetti and pot pourri.
I can provide flowers for special orders, small weddings and other events where a natural style is wanted. Best to contact me via email (see below).

Flowers bring such pleasure, they are great for wildlife, and my flowers come with no air miles, and are grown without any artificial fertilizers or pesticides.

The global flower industry is a little shocking as it involves flowers being grown in hot countries year round like Kenya and South America, where they are then flown to the central global wholesale market in Amsterdam, before being shipped to regional wholesale markets in the UK. An article from the BBC gives quite a good over view of the situation (see below).
British Flowers are making a come back, and I am proud to be a small part of this movement.
