The Green Yard

The Green Yard is a small plant shop in the heart of Headingley. It stocks a good range of houseplants and outdoor plants as well as some gardening sundries. We work hard to keep our varied stock at affordable prices. Our outdoor plants can be found in the carpark of HEART, and our indoor collection is in HEART’s reception area, where you can pay for all purchases.

The Green Yard has, since May 2022, been owned by Becky Moore and Steve Trattles: “After decades of gardening and plant obsession we couldn't resist The Green Yard. So when it became available, we jumped at the chance to take up ownership of it.  In our first year of trading we've bought in all our plants from local wholesalers and nurseries, but we've already started experimenting with raising our own plants from seeds.”

Becky and Steve are both from Leeds. They have lived in Headingley much of their lives, and still live locally. Steve worked at HEART for many years and now volunteers there. Becky is an artist, runs Design@HEART Art and Craft Fairs and has collaborated with HEART on art and design projects. They met at HEART, 10 years ago and married 4 years ago. They are familiar faces in Headingley, and know many of The Green Yard customers personally. “We are both hugely committed to the HEART Centre and delighted to be running our store there.”

Ethos The Green Yard cares about plants and cares about customers. We want to supply good quality plants that people can afford, and provide information that will ensure that our customers are able to get the best out of their plants. We believe in ‘right plant, right place’. We believe that there’s a plant for every garden and every home, it’s a question of finding the right one.
● We are committed to being peat free in any of our products that we have control over. In England there will be a ban on peat sales to private gardeners and allotments in 2024, but we aren’t waiting around for that law to come into force. We will never sell peat-based compost, and any plants we cultivate ourselves will be in peat free compost. We feel this is really important to the survival of the planet’s peatlands and the diverse species that depend on peatlands. But we also know that peatlands are one of the world’s greatest storers of carbon.
● We strive to reduce, reuse and recycle any plastic as much as possible. We sell compost in plastic free bags, and run a pot swap scheme. And we try to package plastic free as much as we can.
● We are also total soil nerds! Soil is one of the most important and precious resources on the planet, and we believe we need to take care of it.

Products The Green Yard stocks an ever-changing range of houseplants such as Schefflerers, Yuccas, Calatheas, Pachiras, Monsteras, Peperomias, Alocasias, cacti, succulents and air plants to name a few. You can purchase small quantity packs of peat-free potting compost - perfect for potting up houseplants - and other gardening sundries. The outdoor plant selection is much greater in the Spring and Summer, when there’s always some perennials, shrubs and alpines. In the Winter there’s a small selection of evergreen shrubs for sale. Plans for 2023 include raising plants from seeds, offering vegetable plants, producing plant care leaflets and booklets and expanding the plant care and soil guide on the website.
